Characteristics of JSW Clad Plates

Economy

The thickness of the expensive corrosion resistant metal is made as thin as possible with the required strength being provided by the backing steel. The cladding ratio and the size of the clad plates can be produced to meet customer’s requirements. In other words, flexibility of materials and made-to-order sizes of the cladding metal and backing steel makes it possible to reduce the material cost.

Larger and thicker clad plates

With one of the largest 4-high plate mills (barrel length of 5,300 mm), JSW is able to manufacture clad plates of very large size. Shortening of weld length and less X-ray test in addition to other merits contribute to make fabrication more practical and substantially reduce cost by use of larger clad plates. In addition, the commercial value and quality of such fabrication are enhanced. As clad plates with a thickness up to 200 mm are manufactured by JSW, it is possible to broaden the field of application where characteristics of clad plates can be best utilized.

Outstanding thermal conductivity

Generally speaking, clad plates have better thermal conductivity than the solid plates and this also helps to expand the application range where higher thermal
conductivity is necessary.

Higher design stress

Outstanding mechanical properties of clad plates are obtained by selection of chemical compositions and heat treating conditions of the backing steel.
Therefore, it is possible to increase the design stress and decrease the plate thickness.

High safety factor

When stress corrosion cracks on solid wall vessels of stainless steel or other metals, such cracks would propagate through the wall. However, the use of clad plates will increase the safety factor as propagation of such cracks is prevented by the bond zone and backing steel and Ni-plating stops the corrosion of backing steel.
